Travel Nurse Housing in Hawaii
This is usually the hardest part of a Hawaii assignment. Furnished short-term inventory near hospitals is limited, and many nurses share housing to stay inside their stipend. Start looking early.
Oahu / Honolulu
Most volume is here. Major facilities include Queen’s Medical Center, Straub, Kaiser, and Kapiolani. Commute matters with 12-hour shifts.
- Near Queen’s / downtown: Higher prices, shorter commute. Limited furnished options.
- Kaimuki / Kapahulu: More residential feel, still workable commute.
- Kapolei / west side: Sometimes more inventory, longer drive.
- Shared houses: Common and often the only way to stay comfortably within stipend.
Most travel nurses start on Furnished Finder (built for 30+ day healthcare stays). Also check Facebook groups and agency housing contacts.
Maui
Tighter inventory, especially post-Lahaina. Kahului and Wailuku are the practical bases for most hospital work. Plan 8+ weeks ahead when possible.
- Car is essentially required.
- Shared or smaller units are more realistic.
- Neighbor-island premiums can help offset higher costs.
Big Island
Hilo and Kona areas. Often more affordable than Oahu, with stronger demand at Hilo Medical Center and Kona Community Hospital. Housing still limited.
- Car required.
- More house/ADU options than high-rise condos.
- Competitive because roles can be harder to fill.
Kauai
Smaller market. Lihue area is the main base. Inventory is sparse. Expect to be flexible on location and housing type.
Neighbor islands: A car is usually required. Most nurses compare rentals early once housing is confirmed.
